I feel I should have done something to mark this traditional day but it was an uneventful day spent partly at home attending to accounts and finances. Partly outside mowing a lawn for a client whose pastime is Lacemaking, a traditional skill in itself.
The May blossom is well and truly out, the tree in our garden is decked in white. Looking its best.
The Crab Apple blossom has peaked and beginning to fade.
My Viburnum sargentii ‘onodaga’ is coming into its own with delicate flower heads .
Grazing on the coarse Tor Grass these animals will improve the grassland and encourage the development of habitat for meadow flowers.
This is a cute little creature with big eyes and ears and weighs between 13-27g. They breed from March through to October with litter sizes of 4-7 and can produce 10 litters in a year.
First sighting of the year of Holly Blue butterfly in a local garden, attracted by Grape Hyacinths possibly.
Weather the past week has been warm and settled. Temps around 15C at max. Felt warmer than that in the Sun.
A walk on the Local Nature reserve – Lancing Ring produced frequent butterfly sightings
including at least two Comma and four Peacock.
The garden has also had passing visits from Red Admiral.
Magpies and Crows are busy trying to build nests using loose twigs from the Hawthorn tree in the garden. After years of argument over the favoured site in the tree, both pairs are nesting in some other tree.
I found a pair of small Hedgehogs in the front garden on Friday, they did not seem very healthy and so we delivered them to Grove lodge veterinary hospital. We have since learned one of them died, which did not come as a surprise. We expect to have the survivor returned to spend the winter in the garden when it has been released from the hospital
A Red Admiral was seen in a sunny garden today, one of the last sightings perhaps..
